Jack McDuff • Soul Circle
Artist Biography by Ron Wynn

Brother Jack McDuff • Prelude
A marvelous bandleader and organist as well as capable arranger, "Brother" Jack McDuff has one of the funkiest, most soulful styles of all time on the Hammond B-3. His rock-solid basslines and blues-drenched solos are balanced by clever, almost pianistic melodies and interesting progressions and phrases. McDuff began as a bassist playing with Denny Zeitlin and Joe Farrell. He studied privately in Cincinnati and worked with Johnny Griffin in Chicago. He taught himself organ and piano in the mid-'50s, and began gaining attention working with Willis Jackson in the late '50s and early '60s, cutting high caliber soul-jazz dates for Prestige. McDuff made his recording debut as a leader for Prestige in 1960, playing in a studio pickup band with Jimmy Forrest. They made a pair of outstanding albums: Tough Duff and The Honeydripper. McDuff organized his own band the next year, featuring Harold Vick and drummer Joe Dukes. Things took off when McDuff hired a young guitarist named George Benson. They were among the most popular combos of the mid-'60s and made several excellent albums. McDuff's later groups at Atlantic and Cadet didn't equal the level of the Benson band, while later dates for Verve and Cadet were uneven, though generally good. McDuff experimented with electronic keyboards and fusion during the '70s, then in the '80s got back in the groove with the Muse session Cap'n Jack. While his health fluctuated throughout the '90s, McDuff released several discs on the Concord Jazz label before succumbing to heart failure on January 23, 2001, at the age of 74. ~ Ron Wynn and Bob Porter.

The Ray Brown Trio • Soular Energy
Review from AllMusic (by Scott Yanow):
This album is important as an early milestone in pianist Gene Harris' second career. Harris, who had led the popular Three Sounds in the 1960s, had been living in obscurity in Boise, ID, for several years before he was urged by bassist Ray Brown to come to the West Coast for some recording sessions. Harris became a permanent member of Brown's regular trio for quite a few years before launching his own quartet. He had lost none of his technique, soul, or swing in the interim, as he shows throughout this fine release. Seven of the eight numbers (highlighted by "Exactly Like You," "Teach Me Tonight," and "Sweet Georgia Brown") feature Brown, Harris, and drummer Gerryck King playing soulful bop, while "Mistreated But Undefeated Blues" adds guitarist Emily Remler and the tenor of Red Holloway. An excellent effort.

Plas Johnson & Red Holloway • Keep That Groove Going
Plas Johnson's playing has a place on almost every American's mental hard drive, even if you don't know his name (he was the piccolo player on Bobby Day's "Rockin' Robin," the tenor sax on The Pink Panther and The Odd Couple themes, etc.). Red Holloway has a higher profile in the jazz world, but like Johnson, chose to confine himself mostly to Los Angeles. Together, in their seventies, they journeyed out to Rudy Van Gelder's studio in New Jersey to match wits on another Bob Porter-produced soul-jazz cooker, effortlessly suggesting tenor battles of the past. They are a most compatible duo, with Johnson displaying a slightly lighter, more overt rhythm & blues tinge, and their sure-footed note selection makes them a pleasure to hear. The battle royal reaches a peak on Arnett Cobb's fortuitously titled "Go Red Go," fading on one ecstatic, repeated, unison, A flat note. There are also solo ballad tracks for each player, where Holloway reaches deep down into warm, majestic Illinois Jacquet/Gene Ammons territory in "Serenade in Blue" and Johnson opens up his lower-register timbre on "Cry Me a River." The rhythm section virtually defines this idiom, with down-home veterans like guitarist Melvin Sparks (who offers killer obbligatos in "Pass the Gravy"), Hammond organist Gene Ludwig, and drummer Kenny Washington keeping the pot boiling. Also, the 24-bit sound that Van Gelder was getting in 2001 projects everything with an oomph and clarity that is astounding even for this master engineer.
//////////

Brother Jack McDuff • Silk And Soul
Brother Jack's organ is set amidst an amazing batch of orchestrations by Benny Golson, and the core of the group is Jack's combo with Red Hollway, George Benson, and Joe Dukes. Golson's arrangements are fantastic, and far from surpressing or overpowering the combo's funky jazz sound, they actually take it to a whole new level, and provide a beautiful platform from which Jack dives and screams on the Hammond B-3. Benson's guitar is amazing, and there's sections in here where he comps so hard and heavy that you won't believe they didn't use a sampler on the album! Cuts include "Scufflin", "Lexington Line", "What's Shakin", and "Silk & Soul".

Los cortes incluyen "Scufflin", "Lexington Line", "What's Shakin "y"Silk & Soul".

Brother Jack McDuff • The Best of the Concord Years
Review by Steve Leggett
Hammond B-3 organist Jack McDuff spent his last decade recording for the Concord Jazz label, and for the most part his albums during this time period lacked the verve and fire of his earlier work, and he seemed, at times, to be going through the motions. The two-disc Best of the Concord Years anthology changes that perception a bit, since by picking some of the best tracks from the individual albums, the end result is a collection that is both more varied and energetic than its original sources, and McDuff emerges as a vital performer to the end. Among the highlights are the slow-building "Killer Joe," a moving take on Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia," the classic soul jazz vamp of "Pettin' the Cat," and a pair of weary, emotionally fulfilling blues duets with pianist Gene Harris, "J and G Blues" and "Down Home Blues." Grady Tate, George Benson, Joey DeFrancesco, Red Holloway, and Pat Martino also take guest turns on selections here. The Best of the Concord Years ends up being just that, the best way to sample McDuff's final years, and culled this way, it is work that stands up admirably to his impressive earlier material.

, "J y G Blues" y "Down Home Blues".

Gene Ammons • Free Again
Artist Biography
Gene Ammons, who had a huge and immediately recognizable tone on
tenor, was a very flexible player who could play bebop with the best
(always battling his friend Sonny Stitt to a tie) yet was an influence
on the R&B world. Some of his ballad renditions became hits and,
despite two unfortunate interruptions in his career, Ammons remained a
popular attraction for 25 years.
Son of the great
boogie-woogie pianist Albert Ammons, Gene Ammons (who was nicknamed
"Jug") left Chicago at age 18 to work with King Kolax's band. He
originally came to fame as a key soloist with Billy Eckstine's orchestra
during 1944-1947, trading off with Dexter Gordon on the famous Eckstine
record Blowing the Blues Away. Other than a notable stint with Woody
Herman's Third Herd in 1949 and an attempt at co-leading a two tenor
group in the early '50s with Sonny Stitt, Ammons worked as a single
throughout his career, recording frequently (most notably for Prestige)
in settings ranging from quartets and organ combos to all-star jam
sessions. Drug problems kept him in prison during much of 1958-1960 and,
due to a particularly stiff sentence, 1962-1969. When Ammons returned
to the scene in 1969, he opened up his style a bit, including some of
the emotional cries of the avant-garde while utilizing funky rhythm
sections, but he was still able to battle Sonny Stitt on his own terms.
Ironically the last song that he ever recorded (just a short time before
he was diagnosed with terminal cancer) was "Goodbye."

boogie-woogie Albert Ammons, Gene Ammons (apodado "Jug") dejó Chicago a
de Eckstine Blowing the Blues Away.

Red Holloway • Red Holloway & Company
Reviews:
Saxophonist Red Holloway (equally distinctive on tenor and alto) performs a more diverse program than usual on this Concord CD, infusing such songs as "But Not for Me," "Passion Flower," Thelonious Monk's "Well You Needn't," "Summertime" and two of his originals with plenty of soul and solid swing. Holloway, a masterful interpreter rather than an innovator, is in top form throughout the recommended set, which also features pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Richard Reid and drummer Jimmie Smith. ~ by Scott Yanow, AMG.
